Raw Galantamine Hydrobromide powder (69353-21-5) Description

Raw Galantamine Hydrobromide powder is a benzazepine derived from norbelladine. It is found in GALANTHUS and other AMARYLLIDACEAE. It is a cholinesterase inhibitor that has been used to reverse the muscular effects of GALLAMINE TRIETHIODIDE and TUBOCURARINE and has been studied as a treatment for ALZHEIMER DISEASE and other central nervous system disorders.

Raw Galantamine Hydrobromide powder is the hydrobromide salt form of galantamine, a tertiary alkaloid obtained synthetically or naturally from the bulbs and flowers of Narcissus and several other genera of the Amaryllidaceae family with anticholinesterase and neurocognitive-enhancing activities. Galantamine competitively and reversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing the concentration and enhancing the action of acetylcholine (Ach). In addition, galantamine is a ligand for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which may increase the presynaptic release of Ach and activate postsynaptic receptors. This agent may improve neurocognitive function in mild and moderate Alzheimer’ s disease and may reduce abstinence-induced cognitive symptoms that promote smoking relapse.

Galantamine Hydrobromide powder (69353-21-5) Mechanism of Action?

Galantamine is a phenanthrene alkaloid and a reversible, competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is not structurally related to other acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Galantamine’s proposed mechanism of action involves the reversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, which prevents the hydrolysis of acetycholine, leading to an increased concentration of acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses. Galantamine also binds allosterically with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and may possibly potentiate the action of agonists (such as acetylcholine) at these receptors.

Recommended Galantamine Hydrobromide powder (69353-21-5) Dosage

Galantamine Hydrobromide powder 16 mg/day is the optimal dosage for patients with mild AD, as similar efficacy is observed with the 24 mg/day dose. However, patients with moderate AD appear to gain additional benefit from galantamine 24 mg/day.‍‍

Side effects of Galantamine Hydrobromide powder (69353-21-5)

Common side effects of Galantamine Hydrobromide powder include muscle cramps and weakness, cardio-respiratory events, skin problems, and urinary incontinence. Taking high doses of Galantamine without building up slowly may also cause nightmares and anxiety.

In addition to these effects, Galantamine’s interaction with other drugs may cause health problems. It is advised to limit the usage of Galantamine when taking certain other medications that are metabolized via the same liver pathway (hepatic cytochrome system).

Thankfully, most of the above side effects are rare and can probably be avoided with sensible dosing.‍‍
